News.gp journalist and a girl with big dreamsAlpine has announced that their reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa will take part in FP1 at this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix.
Ryo Hirakawa will step in for Jack Doohan at the start of the event in Suzuka. For the Japanese driver, it is a special opportunity to drive in front of his home crowd and gain more experience in Formula 1.
The 31-year-old is best known for his success in endurance racing. He races for Toyota in the World Endurance Championship, where he has achieved great results, including a win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2022 and two Hypercar titles.
Despite his busy racing schedule, he joined Alpine as a reserve driver for this season, combining his F1 duties with his ongoing work for Toyota.
This is also not Hirakawa’s first time taking part in an F1 practice session. He drove for McLaren in first practice at last year’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and also tested with Haas after the season ended. Since joining Alpine in January, he has been involved in simulator work, testing older cars and supporting the team with technical feedback.
“I'm very excited, I can’t wait to drive the A525 in Free Practice 1 this weekend,” Hirakawa said.
“I’m looking back to 18 years ago to 2007, the first time I went to watch the Japanese Grand Prix, it was a different track, Fuji, but it was F1 in Japan.
“Since then, I started my racing career and now to drive during the weekend is going to be a dream come true, I just can’t wait. I have got everything prepared, we did simulator work in Enstone a few days ago and I’m going to enjoy the moment.
“Hopefully the weather is good, it will be a short session, but I will enjoy it and do my best for the team to hopefully input some direction on set up.
“I just want to add my appreciation to everyone at the team for the opportunity and support.”
