Today marks 20 years since the 2005 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, a race that is still remembered as one of the most thrilling in modern Formula 1 history.
The race did not have big crashes or safety cars but it delivered something even better. It gave fans a real and intense battle between two top drivers at the very peak of their abilities.
The race started with Kimi Raikkonen on pole position but he was forced to retire early with mechanical problems. That opened the door for Fernando Alonso in his Renault to take the lead. He was just 23 years old and already showing he had the talent to fight for the world title. Behind him was Michael Schumacher in his Ferrari who had started from 13th place but made a strong comeback during the race.
By the final part of the Grand Prix Schumacher had caught up with Alonso. For the last 12 laps the Ferrari was right behind the Renault. It looked like only a matter of time before Schumacher would pass and take the win. But Alonso had other plans. He defended his lead with calm and clever driving never making a mistake under huge pressure.
Every lap the gap stayed close with Schumacher trying to overtake at every chance. Imola is a narrow and tricky circuit with few good places to pass. That made Alonso’s job even harder but also showed just how perfectly he drove.

When the chequered flag waved Alonso crossed the line first with Schumacher just 0.2 seconds behind. The young Spaniard had done what many thought was impossible. He held off the seven-time world champion lap after lap and showed the world he was ready to be champion.
That race became one of the most talked-about moments of the 2005 season. It was a turning point for Alonso who went on to win the World Championship that year. It was also one of the last great battles at Imola before the circuit disappeared from the calendar for several years.
The future of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix is uncertain, with this year’s race possibly being its last on the F1 calendar. Don’t miss your chance to experience it and secure your tickets now! ↓
