The FIA has officially confirmed that General Motors (GM), through its newly established company GM Performance Power Units LLC., has been approved as a Formula 1 power unit supplier starting from the 2029 season.
Cadillac is set to make its debut on the F1 grid in 2026, marking a significant expansion of American involvement in the sport. In its initial three seasons, 2026, 2027, and now also 2028, the team will be powered by Ferrari engines, thanks to a supply deal already in place with the Italian manufacturer. This arrangement will support Cadillac’s entry while its in-house power unit is being developed for the 2029 campaign.
Being officially registered as a power unit manufacturer is a major milestone for General Motors and a crucial part of its long-term Formula 1 project. This move also played a key role in the FIA and Formula One Management (FOM) approving Cadillac’s application to become the 11th team on the grid. With GM’s vast automotive heritage and resources, expectations are high for what this collaboration could bring to the sport in the years ahead.
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem said: "Over two years ago, the FIA approved the entry of an eleventh team into the FIA Formula One World Championship, guided by my vision to expand the grid and bring new talent and opportunity to our sport.
"Although the process was at times challenging, the progress we see today affirms the journey has been worthwhile.
"Welcoming GM Performance Power Units LLC. as an approved power unit supplier for the Championship starting in 2029 marks another step in the global expansion of Formula 1 and highlights the growing interest from world-class automotive manufacturers like General Motors.
"Their dedication to innovation, sustainability, and competition is fully aligned with the FlA's vision for the future of our sport. It also strengthens our commitment to making motorsport more accessible and inclusive worldwide — welcoming new manufacturers, advancing technology, and connecting with a broader, more diverse fan base."
