News.gp journalist and a girl with big dreamsThe World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) has officially approved a rule that will require F1 teams to make two pit stops during the Monaco GP.
This change has been made because of growing complaints that the race is too predictable and lacks excitement. Monaco’s narrow streets have always made overtaking difficult, but as modern F1 cars have become larger, passing has become almost impossible. As a result, the race is usually decided by qualifying on Saturday, with little happening on Sunday.
The decision to introduce a two-stop rule comes after a series of dull races at Monaco, including last year’s event, where only four overtakes happened on track. An early red flag allowed many teams to change tyres under caution, which removed much of the race’s strategic element and made it even less interesting.
The aim of the new rule is to add more action to the race, forcing teams to make at least two pit stops and use different strategie. This could lead to more exciting battles and unexpected results.
While Monaco’s qualifying session is still considered one of the best parts of the F1 season, the race itself has become less popular with fans, with some even suggesting it should be dropped from the calendar. Now that the rule, which will apply in all weather conditions, has been approved, the race is hoping to gain its audience back.
The official FIA statement reads: "The WMSC reviewed a proposal regarding the implementation of a mandatory 2-stop strategy (in both wet and dry conditions) for the Monaco GP, with the primary intent of improving the sporting spectacle of this race.
"Following recent discussions in the F1 Commission, a specific requirement for the Monaco GP has been approved mandating the use of at least three sets of tyres in the race, with a minimum of two different tyre compounds to be used if it’s a dry race."
