For 2024, the Qatar Grand Prix has been moved to a later date due to the extreme weather conditions drivers had to face in 2023.

The Qatar Grand Prix returned to the Formula 1 calendar in 2023, marking its second-ever appearance since its debut in 2021, while securing a 10-year deal with the series.

However, last year’s event turned out to be one of the hardest races F1 drivers had ever experienced due to the extreme heat and humidity.

The Grand Prix was held in early October when Qatar’s weather is still extremely hot and even though it was a night race, the temperature remained around 33°C. Inside the cars, it was even hotter, reaching up to 50°C.

Several factors made the race especially challenging. The Lusail International Circuit is known for its demanding layout, with many high-speed corners that expose drivers to strong G-forces.

On top of everything, due to issues that were discovered with the tyres on Qatar’s unique kerbs, the FIA limited drivers to a maximum of 18 laps per set of tyres, to avoid a high risk of puncture. Because of this, drivers had to push harder than usual, as there was no need to save the tyres like in other races.

The combination of the heat, the physical demands of the track, and the special tyre rule caused serious problems for many drivers. Esteban Ocon admitted he vomited in his car during the race and described it as the hardest fight for points he’d ever had.

His friend, Lance Stroll, revealed he almost fainted while driving and Logan Sargeant even retired from the race early due to feeling unwell. After the race, many drivers needed help from medical staff as they couldn’t get out of the car by themselves.

One big reason for these extreme conditions was the timing of the race. In early October, Qatar’s temperatures are still very high, but by late November, the weather is much cooler and more manageable.

Moving the race to a later date in 2024 will help avoid the risks drivers faced last year. It will create safer and more comfortable conditions, ensuring the race remains competitive without putting drivers’ health in danger.
