Former F1 driver and world champion Nico Rosberg praised McLaren for playing smart on the limits of legality regarding their ‘mini-DRS’.
McLaren's low-downforce rear wing garnered significant attention following Oscar Piastri's victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku two weeks ago.
The camera footage revealed that the upper and lower elements of the MCL38's rear wing separated to form a slot gap on the straights, reducing drag and enhancing performance, leading it to be referred to as a 'mini-DRS' system.
Ferrari and Red Bull raised concerns about its legality, with the Milton Keynes-based team lodging multiple protests against it. Surprisingly they were successful and FIA ordered McLaren to modify their their rear wing.
After Lando Norris secured pole position in Singapore, without the need to use the controversial system, the Team Principal of the Papaya team, Andrea Stella, had a pointed message for the rival teams that had raised concerns.
“Well, the effect is absolutely zero,” told Sky F1 Stella after the Singapore GP qualifying.
“I think we saw that today.
“For us, it’s just good news that our competitors get distracted with this kind of things, because it means they don’t focus on themselves. And for us, it’s just an advantage.”
McLaren's 'mini-DRS' system also caught the attention of former F1 driver Nico Rosberg. The 2016 world champion commended McLaren for their clever approach.
“They are the ones pushing the boundaries the most,” told Sky F1 Rosberg.
“They’re maximising those grey areas of legality.
“On the rear wing, we know that all the teams are doing it on the front wing and rumours are McLaren is also there pushing the boundaries.
“And that for me is also an indication that they’re just on it you know, because that’s what you need to do when you’re looking for performance, push those limits,” he added.
Norris then delivered a commanding performance in Singapore, winning the race by a 21-second margin over title rival Max Verstappen and once again proved that McLaren are the favourites to win the Constructor’s Championship.
