Jorge Martin has become the fifth Spanish rider to win a premier-class championship title, following Alex Criville (1999), Jorge Lorenzo (2010, 2012, 2015), Marc Marquez (2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019), and Joan Mir (2020). Martin’s triumph is also a historic milestone, as he is the first rider in modern history to win a title with a satellite team. The last person to achieve this was Valentino Rossi, who claimed the championship in 2001 with Nastro Azzurro Honda.

Martin’s journey to the title was marked by determination. In 2023, he fought for the championship but ultimately finished 39 points behind Francesco Bagnaia. This season, Martin secured the title with a third-place finish at the Barcelona Grand Prix, arriving with a 24-point lead.

Reflecting on this season, Martin credited consistent effort across all 19 races: “There is no key to this last race; it has been the work of 19 grand prix that has brought us here. The fair thing is to win the title.” In the lead-up to the finale, he often used words like "fair" and "justice," emphasizing the merit of his success. After a weather-affected Malaysian round that strengthened his lead, Martin dismissed good-luck wishes for the finale with the retort: “Justice, not luck.”

This season’s battle showcased Martin’s strategic brilliance. While Bagnaia suffered crashes in several races and sprints, Martin demonstrated steady performances, particularly in the sprints. Growing up near Madrid, Martin’s passion for motorcycle racing began with family trips to Jerez to watch Alex Criville’s triumphs. Martin has admitted that he still carries the same flag his parents waved back then.

However, Martin’s rise wasn’t without challenges. It wasn’t until 2012 that he reached the Red Bull Rookies Cup, and after two years of effort, he won the title in 2014, which enabled him to move up to Moto3. His early results were mixed, but after switching to Honda in 2017, he achieved his first victory in Valencia, setting the stage for his title the following year.

In Moto2, Martin faced some inconsistency during his 2019 debut with KTM, but his results improved in 2020 after switching to Kalex bikes. That year, he finished fifth in the overall standings. It was a pivotal moment in his career, as KTM’s delay in promoting him to MotoGP allowed Martin to join Ducati’s satellite team, Pramac, for 2021 and 2022 under a factory contract.

Despite Martin’s strong performances with Pramac (one win and eight podiums) Ducati chose Enea Bastianini for the 2023 factory seat instead of him. Martin stayed determined and continued with Pramac, ultimately securing the title in 2024.

This season, Martin took an early lead in the standings but faced setbacks as Ducati prioritized Marc Marquez for 2025, leaving Martin overlooked once again. Martin decided to take fate into his own hands and signed with Aprilia for 2025.

Martin now joins Aprilia as the reigning world champion, with an opportunity to carry the number one plate on his Aprilia next year. His title victory cements his legacy and sets the stage for an exciting new chapter with Aprilia.
