Francesco Bagnaia has voiced strong concerns about the new MotoGP team radio system following tests during the Barcelona event. Developed by Dorna to enhance rider safety and strategy, the system faces criticism for its practicality and safety risks. Bagnaia and other riders shared mixed reactions after testing the system throughout the 2024 season.
Francesco Bagnaia is skeptical about the team radio system after it was tested during the Barcelona test. The radio system was introduced by series promoter Dorna.
Dorna has been working on a rider-to-garage voice system that aims to enhance MotoGP safety and tactics. Once fully implemented, the system would enable two-way communication between riders and their teams, advancing beyond the current text-based messages displayed on bikes’ screens.
Bagnaia participated in the trial during the official test in Barcelona, using all the necessary equipment. However, Bagnaia is strongly against the system’s use, citing concerns over safety and practicality due to the wiring involved.
“I tested it, but it’s not ready yet,” said Bagnaia. “It didn’t work when I tried it. I couldn’t hear anything, and the large cable needed to connect it was disturbing—it could even be dangerous. I’ll try it again when it’s more developed, but for now, it’s not ready.”
Throughout 2024, several riders tested the F1-style radio system in its developmental phase, which has received mixed reactions. While some riders are more open to its potential, others remain unconvinced.
Bagnaia’s opinion has remained unchanged since the test at Misano in September, where he stated he wouldn’t adopt the system even if it were mandatory.
“I think I’d get penalties every race, like [Michael] Jordan did for wearing red sneakers instead of white,” he said then. “The system is uncomfortable—it hurts after 30 seconds of use. Imagine using it for 40 minutes while racing. It just doesn’t make sense.”
Bagnaia wasn’t alone in testing the system at Barcelona. Ducati test rider Michele Pirro also tried the setup, with an intercom installed in his helmet, allowing him direct communication with team manager Davide Tardozzi in the garage.
