News.gp journalist and a girl with big dreamsThe 2025 Formula 1 season is finally here, and what better place to start than Melbourne? Let’s take a look at what we can expect from the season opener.
After years of the season kicking off in Bahrain, the Australian Grand Prix is back as the first race on the calendar, just as it should be. There’s always something special about the buzz around Albert Park when it’s the opening round, with fans, teams, and drivers all eager to see where they really stand after months of speculation. And this year, there’s plenty to talk about.
The biggest story going into the race is, of course, Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari debut. After more than a decade with Mercedes, he’s taken the biggest gamble of his career, hoping to win an eighth world title in red. Melbourne will give us the first real indication of whether that’s a possibility or if Ferrari still has the same old problems. Hamilton won’t want to waste any time proving he made the right choice, and if he’s anywhere near the front, expect him to be fighting for the win.
On the other side of the garage, Charles Leclerc will be just as determined to show that Ferrari is still his team. If the car is quick, we could see an early battle between the two teammates, which would be a dream scenario for fans but a nightmare for Ferrari’s strategists.
Then there’s Max Verstappen. After securing his fourth consecutive title last year, he arrives in Melbourne as the reigning champion but there’s a bit of a doubt if his team will give him a car that can win the championship. He also has a new teammate, Liam Lawson, who has a lot to prove. Red Bull has never been the easiest team for young drivers, and with so much pressure to perform, he’ll need a clean and solid first race.
For the home crowd, all eyes will be on Oscar Piastri. He had an impressive season last year, and with McLaren looking strong in testing, this could be his best chance yet for a big result at his home Grand Prix. No Australian has ever won in Melbourne, and while a victory might be a stretch, a podium isn’t out of the question. If McLaren is competitive, he’ll be right in the mix.
Another Australian on the grid is Jack Doohan, but expectations for him are much lower. He’s only just stepped up to a full-time F1 seat and is already under pressure, especially from Alpine's reserve driver Franco Colapinto. If he wants to keep his drive long-term, he’ll need to prove he belongs in F1, but Melbourne probably won’t be the place where that happens. He just needs to get through the weekend without major mistakes.
Albert Park itself has changed a lot over the years, with tweaks to the layout to make racing better. The track is fast, but overtaking can still be tricky, so strategy and tyre management will be crucial. The weather could also play a role, with hot conditions expected all weekend but with a chance of rain on Sunday.
One thing is for sure—Melbourne always delivers drama. Whether it’s a surprise winner, an unexpected crash, or a new rivalry kicking off, something always happens here.
