Repsol will conclude its iconic 30-year partnership with Honda at the end of the 2024 MotoGP season, marking the end of a legendary era in motorcycle racing. After decades of success, the Spanish oil giant has decided not to renew its sponsorship, with Honda shifting towards its own branding for future campaigns.
Repsol is set to end its iconic partnership with Honda at the end of the 2024 MotoGP season, marking the end of one of the most recognizable alliances in motorcycle racing. Since 1995, the Spanish oil giant's sponsorship has been synonymous with Honda’s dominance in the sport, creating one of the most famous liveries in modern history.
However, Repsol had already scaled back its involvement in 2024, leading to Honda introducing a new livery that incorporated its own corporate colors alongside Repsol’s signature orange. By the end of the season, the RC213V will no longer wear Repsol's branding, as the company decided not to renew its sponsorship deal with Honda Racing Corporation.
In an official statement, Repsol confirmed its decision: "Repsol has decided not to renew its current sponsorship contract with Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) in the MotoGP World Championship, which ends on December 31 of this year."
The company acknowledged the team’s success during their time together, which included 10 team titles, 15 rider championships, and 183 victories. Repsol also expressed gratitude for HRC’s dedication over the decades and affirmed that it remains committed to motor racing.
The announcement came shortly after the San Marino Grand Prix, where both Repsol Honda riders were forced to withdraw due to illness. While Mir sat out the entire weekend, Marini withdrew on Sunday morning. Honda was instead represented by Johann Zarco and Takaaki Nakagami from the LCR team, as well as wildcard rider Stefan Bradl.
Repsol and Honda’s collaboration brought success to legendary riders such as Mick Doohan, Valentino Rossi, Casey Stoner, and Marc Marquez. However, Honda’s recent struggles, combined with Marquez’s departure last year, had already cast doubt on the future of the partnership. Honda, meanwhile, has focused on promoting its own red, white, and blue corporate colors, signaling a shift in the company’s branding strategy.
As this era comes to an end, it marks a turning point not only for Honda but for MotoGP as well, as one of the sport’s most legendary teams will race without its longtime sponsor in 2025.
