Lewis Hamilton’s interest in MotoGP has been increasing as he is reportedly exploring investment opportunities with finantially struggling KTM manufacturer.
Lewis Hamilton’s passion for speed extends beyond cars, with the seven-time F1 world champion now reportedly exploring opportunities in MotoGP.
After previously considering an investment in Gresini Racing’s Ducati team, Hamilton has reportedly entered “concrete talks” about acquiring a stake in KTM’s MotoGP program.
KTM is facing a significant financial crisis, with debts reportedly reaching €3 billion in 2024. To tackle this, the company has begun a European restructuring process, aiming to reduce its debt by 30%. A €700 million investment, managed by Citigroup Investment Bank, is part of the plan to stabilize its finances. However, KTM is now open to selling a share of its MotoGP team to secure additional funding.
Operating a MotoGP works team costs KTM around €40 million annually, a figure supported by sponsors like Red Bull and Mobil 1. While the brand has assured that its racing programs will continue next year, outside investment is critical for its future.
With a factory team, a satellite team (Tech3), and involvement in Moto2 and Moto3, KTM plays a major role in MotoGP. Hamilton’s interest could provide much-needed support for the struggling manufacturer while giving him a new avenue to pursue his love for motorcycle racing.
"I can only say that we had very interesting discussions with his management," Pit Beirer, Motorsports Director of KTM, told Speedweek.
"It's no secret that Lewis Hamilton is interested in MotoGP and is thinking about his own team.
"Here, too, there are concrete talks."
As Lewis Hamilton prepares for his move to Ferrari in 2025, his long-standing partnership with Monster Energy, which has been a cornerstone of his Mercedes career for over a decade, is reportedly coming to an end.
Despite concerns, KTM ties with Red Bull, a major rival of Monster, doesn’t seem to pose any issues.
Regarding that, Bierer said: "Anyone who wants to work with us knows about the proximity – Red Bull and KTM are inseparable. That has not been an issue in the negotiations so far."
He added: "An investor is something different from a sponsor.
"We also work with our sponsors in a very strong partnership. When you have partners at the table who give you money for such a great project, they get involved. That should also be positive.
"When strong partners sit at the table and think, good solutions come to light together. So it's clear that such people will have a certain say."
Additionally, F1 owner Liberty Media is in the process of taking over MotoGP from Dorna Sports, a deal that will undergo a full investigation by the European Union.
