Yamaha rider Fabio Quartararo has expressed frustration after running out of fuel during a MotoGP race for the second time in just three events. The 2021 world champion, who lost out on potential top finishes at both the Japanese and Emilia Romagna Grands Prix, called the situation "unacceptable" and highlighted ongoing issues with Yamaha's fuel strategy and grip performance.

Yamaha rider Fabio Quartararo has stated that running out of fuel for the second time in the last three races is "unacceptable." The first instance occurred at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, where the Frenchman missed out on a potential fifth-place finish.

“It’s unacceptable—twice in three races,” said Quartararo after the race, which took place on a track known for fuel consumption issues. Several other riders also came close to running out, but Quartararo was visibly frustrated during the post-race interview. “It’s bad enough we struggled all weekend, but running out of fuel on top of that? Ridiculous.”

When asked if Yamaha had any strategy to prevent this from happening, Quartararo revealed that their mapping and warning systems had failed. “We need to figure out why the lights didn’t come on and why the strategy didn’t work. It’s up to me to follow the instructions the team gives me, but there weren’t any. Let’s just say whatever instructions I got didn’t help.”

The fuel problem wasn’t the only issue on Quartararo’s mind during the weekend, as Yamaha also struggled with grip. He qualified 12th and had difficulties throughout both the Sprint and the main race. Physically drained, he described how he felt: “I’m dead. By the middle of the race, my arms were shot, and I was aching all over. That’s because of the grip. When you don’t have grip, the bike won’t change direction, it doesn’t brake properly, and you have to push it so hard. It makes the race feel so much longer.”

Tyre wear, combined with grip issues, played a huge role in his struggles on Sunday: “Even by the second lap, compared to everyone else, it felt like they had fresh tyres, and mine were already at the end of their life. It’s hard to understand why there’s such a big difference.”

Quartararo also pointed out that even when compared to other struggling manufacturers like Honda, Yamaha’s grip issues stand out. “Honda is clearly better than us in that respect.”

When speaking to French broadcaster Canal+, Quartararo admitted that with Yamaha’s current performance, there’s little reason to push the limits with fuel strategies. “I don’t think using a slightly different fuel map is going to change anything, especially with where we are right now. We didn’t need to play it so close to the edge this weekend. We need answers because, like I said, this is unacceptable.”
