News.gp journalist and a girl with big dreamsAfter a record-breaking 2023 season in Formula 1, two of the most powerful figures at Red Bull, Christian Horner and Helmut Marko, saw significant salary increases.
After a strong start to the 2024 season, where Red Bull initially looked set to continue their Formula 1 dominance, their performance has unexpectedly slipped, and they have now lost their first position in the Constructors' Championship to McLaren.
Despite the setback, Red Bull’s situation remains fairly positive, especially for team boss Christian Horner, who saw a big salary increase after the team’s amazing 2023 season, where Max Verstappen won 19 out of 22 races and claimed his third straight world champion title.
According to The Times, Horner, as Director of Red Bull Technologies Ltd, earned £8.92 million in 2023, an 11% increase from his 2022 salary of £8.04 million.
In comparison, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff earned £6 million in salary but also received an extra £25 million in dividends because he’s a shareholder, something Horner doesn’t get since he isn’t a Red Bull shareholder. Still, Red Bull’s shareholders received a total of £50 million in dividends, so the team’s 2023 success brought big rewards for them, too.
Red Bull’s motorsport advisor, Helmut Marko, also got a big pay boost, with his salary doubling from £3.5 million in 2022 to £7 million in 2023.
However, Red Bull’s 2024 season has been tougher, with internal tensions, scandals, and major team members leaving, including Sporting Director Jonathan Wheatley and Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey, who will join Aston Martin next year.
Although Verstappen is still likely to win the drivers’ title, Red Bull risks losing out on Constructors’ prize money, which could affect Horner and Marko’s salaries going into 2025 as the team looks to recover from a challenging year.
