Anthoine Hubert was a talented French racing driver well-known for his promising looking career in motorsport. He started in karting in 2006 and quickly progressed to single-seater racing. In 2013, he won the French F4 Championship, and in 2017, he joined the GP3 Series (now F3), where he finished fourth overall. The following year, he won the series with ART Grand Prix. In 2019, Hubert moved up to Formula 2 with a British team BWT Arden, where he secured 2 victories (in Monaco and France), showcasing his talent and future potential.

Tragically, on August 31, 2019, during a Formula 2 race at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, Hubert was involved in a fatal accident, which occured only at a second lap of the race. What preceded this horiffic accident was Giuliano Alesi’s crash at the Raidillon curve, after suffering a punctured tire. Several cars behind Alesi slowed down, but Hubert, unable to see the incident ahead, clipped the slowing car of Ralph Boshung.

The Frenchman experienced three major impacts: first, he hit the barrier at 216 km/h after exiting the high-speed Raidillon corner, creating a force of 33.7G. The second impact was when American driver Juan Manuel Correa's car struck him with a force of 81.8G and the third impact occurred when this collision sent him into the barrier again.

Correa was transported to a hospital, where he underwent surgery for fractures in both legs and a minor spinal injury. He was reported to be in stable condition, having remained conscious after the impact, but was placed in an induced coma a week later. Alesi, the third driver involved in the accident, was unharmed, unfortunately, Hubert suffered fatal injuries. Following the incident, the feature race was not completed, and the sprint race was canceled out of respect.

After Hubert’s death, many drivers and teams in the motorsport world paid tribute to the French talent. The next day, a minute's silence was held before the Formula 3 and Formula 1 races at Spa. Charles Leclerc, Hubert’s friend and former F3 rival, won his first ever F1 race that day and dedicated his victory to Hubert. During the 19th lap of the race, corresponding to Hubert's car number 19 in Formula 2, a standing ovation took place. Before the race, all racing safety vehicles, including the safety car, medical car, and others, made a lap around Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in tribute. Additionally, all F1 cars displayed Hubert's car number inside a star with the words "Racing for Anthoine."

Pierre Gasly brings flowers and pays tribute to his very good friend every year in the vital turn. He also dedicated his emocional first win in the 2020 Italian Grand Prix to Hubert, as one of his last messages to Gasly before he died stated: "Prove them wrong, " which he send right after Red Bull decided to drop Gasly the same weekend Hubert died.

The number 19 has been also pronounced as a permanently retired from use in Formula 2, to always remember Anthoine Hubert.
