Pedro Acosta faced difficulties during the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez, starting from 12th on the grid after a disappointing qualifying. He remains determined to improve, learning from veteran Maverick Viñales and looking ahead to crucial tests and upcoming races.
At Saturday's Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez, Pedro Acosta had a tough day. After finishing last in Q2, he ended up starting 12th on the grid. This less-than-ideal qualifying result dashed his hopes of being competitive at the front of the pack.
However, despite this setback, Acosta somehow managed to be pleased with his Friday performance, where he finished in the top 10. Unfortunately, Saturday proved to be the complete opposite. He couldn’t manage to set a fast lap in qualifying, which put him on the fourth row of the grid. From there, he finished 10th in the sprint race.
Reflecting on the weekend so far, Acosta admitted to MotoGP.com, “I was hoping for better results, but we must keep working and learning. There are still many things we need to understand. It’s confusing because the bike felt decent in qualifying, but during the Sprint, when the temperature rose, the track behaved differently, and we couldn’t adapt fast enough.”
On a more positive note, Acosta pointed to the consistent performance of Maverick Viñales, who finished 7th. “It’s a good sign when a rider like Maverick is able to get the best out of our bike. He has a lot of experience, having developed the Suzuki and ridden well on Yamaha and Aprilia. When he speaks, his insights make a lot of sense. It’s encouraging to see him get solid results,” Acosta shared in KTM report.
Looking ahead to the Sunday race, Acosta said he hoped the medium tires would offer better grip to reduce bike vibrations, which has been a problem for KTM this season. However, he acknowledged that tire wear would be a challenge for everyone over the long race distance.
The upcoming Monday test is also on Acosta's mind. He had previously called it the most important day of the year, but now, he is taking a more patient approach. “I’m not sure what to expect from Monday’s test, but it’s still crucial. We have two more races after this, and there’s another test in Aragón in June. We’ll focus on Sunday’s race first, and then we’ll see what we can improve in the test.” He said to MotoGP.com.
The young talent admitted that this is the most challenging time of his career so far. “It’s frustrating because I feel limited, like I can’t do much to improve the situation. But I have to keep working. Maverick’s recent results give me hope. We have to learn from him and improve.” He said in KTM report.
Last year, Acosta was KTM's main reference point, but this year, the situation has changed. “Right now, I’m not too concerned about who the reference point is for KTM. The most important thing is that the bike works. The real problem comes when you arrive at a race with a clear goal, but no matter what you do, you just can’t reach it. That’s when things get really frustrating.” He said to MotoGP.com.
