Alex Rins showed incredible courage at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez after suffering a painful crash during morning practice. Despite a cracked wrist and knee injury, the Monster Yamaha rider pushed through the pain to finish the Sprint Race, proving his fighting spirit on a tough Saturday.
While Fabio Quartararo celebrated his amazing pole position, his teammate Alex Rins had a rough Saturday at Jerez.
The day started badly for Rins. During a morning practice, he crashed twice. His first crash was a small one at the hairpin turn, with barely any damage. Yet the second crash, at the fast Turn 4, was much worse.
It was the exact turn where Franco Morbidelli had already caused red flags, as his bike had damaged the airfence.
After Rins' crash, he was taken to the Medical Center for checks. Luckily, he was declared fit so he could continue his weekend. However, the doctors found a small crack in his wrist and a knee injury from the hard hit.
"It was a big crash," Rins said to MotoGP.com. "I lost the front of the bike at high speed and hit the airfence, then the wall. For such a fast crash, I'm feeling OK. But my wrist has a small crack and my knee is very sore."
Even with the pain, Rins went back out for Qualifying and managed to complete one fast lap, but it placed him 23rd on the grid.
In the afternoon Sprint Race, Rins showed he was a real warrior. Despite riding in pain and with a bike setup that didn’t suit him, he finished 15th, mostly helped by three riders crashing out, including his teammate Quartararo.
"I raced the Sprint just to test how my body feels," Rins explained during the media debrief. "Now I'm really hurting — after a crash like that, all the muscles ache. But it was important because we also tried a new bike setup, and now we know it's not the right direction. We’re still a bit far from Fabio, so there’s work to do."
Even the Monster Yamaha team director, Massimo Meregalli, praised Rins for his bravery.
"Mentally and physically, it’s a very hard situation, but Alex did a good job. He slowly built back his confidence, made some good passes, and that will help him in Sunday’s longer race," said Meregalli to MotoGP.com.
