Marc Marquez and Alex Marquez were each fined 2,000 euros after exiting the pit lane under a red light during MotoGP qualifying at Jerez. Despite the incident, Marc held on to his front row spot, while Alex kept his fourth-place start. Fabio Quartararo claimed pole position, ending Marc’s unbeaten qualifying run
The current MotoGP leader Marc Marquez and his brother Alex Marquez both got fined 2,000 euros during qualifying at Jerez. The reason was a pit lane mistake.
At the start of Q2, both riders crossed the pit exit line before the green light came on, meaning they left the pits when it was officially closed. According to MotoGP rules, riders are not allowed to exit the pit lane under a red light.
Alex Marquez had his first flying lap canceled as a penalty. However, since his best lap came much later in the session, his fourth place on the grid remains safe. Marc Marquez, on the other hand, kept all his laps because after crossing the line, he immediately stopped and waited for the green light. The stewards decided that he did not gain any advantage.
Despite the drama, Fabio Quartararo took pole position and ended Marc's perfect streak of pole positions this season. Marc still ended up in second place, while his teammate Francesco Bagnaia finished third.
Bagnaia, speaking after qualifying wiht MotoGP.com, hinted that he was waiting to see if there would be any changes due to penalties: “Let’s see if something changes because both Alex and Marc went out when the lights were still red,” he said. "Maybe I can move up a spot. But either way, I'm very happy with our work and my feeling on the bike is great."
Marc admitted he reacted as fast as he could when he realized his mistake. Speaking to Crash.net, he said: “If I get a penalty for that, you can forget about the championship,” Marc joked. “I went out, but I braked super hard and stopped because I thought the light was about to turn green."
He added: "The most important thing is that we performed well on the track. We're back on the front row. Fabio was incredible today—doing a 1:35.6 lap time, super fast—and we're right there, super close. It’s going to be a really tight race between Fabio, Pecco (Bagnaia), and Alex."
But unlike Marc, Alex did not slow down after crossing the pit exit line, which is why his first lap was canceled.
