Francesco Bagnaia claimed pole position at the Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia, setting a stunning new lap record of 1:56.337. Francesco Bagnaia delivered an absolutely thrilling performance to take pole position in Malaysia, breaking the previous lap record with a time of 1:56.337. The reigning champion put together a perfect lap, gaining an advantage over Jorge Martin. However, Martin managed to break into the 1:56s as well but couldn’t match Bagnaia’s pace on his second run. Alongside Bagnaia and Martin on the front row will be Alex Marquez, who had a strong lap that secured him third place.
During FP2, riders and teams focused on fine-tuning their setups, with Bagnaia finishing the session fastest alongside Martin. The scene was set for an exciting qualifying session, where Marco Bezzecchi set a blistering pace in Q1. As the session progressed, times began to drop rapidly, with Johann Zarco and Brad Binder stepping up to take the top spots and advance to Q2.
In Q2, Martin started strong, with his first run in the 1:56 range. He then improved his time but was later beaten by Bagnaia, who delivered an absolutely perfect run to take pole position. The reigning champion pushed to the absolute limit. Unfortunately for Bagnaia’s teammate, Enea Bastianini, he suffered a crash in the final moments of the session.
Franco Morbidelli will lead the second row after an impressive late push in Q2, which secured him fourth place. He will line up ahead of Marc Marquez, who struggled to find additional speed with fresh tires and will start from fifth. Bastianini, who crashed in the final moments, rounds out the second row in sixth, as he was unable to improve his time.
Jack Miller will start from seventh, delivering a strong showing over the weekend. Joining him will be Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins, with both Yamahas looking strong here in Malaysia.
Pedro Acosta narrowly missed out on Q2, qualifying 13th. The rookie will start ahead of Marco Bezzecchi and Raul Fernandez. Andrea Iannone, the comeback icon, will line up 17th, continuing his impressive return to MotoGP.
