News.gp journalist and a girl with big dreamsThe FIA will implement measures to prevent a repeat of the grass fires seen during second practice at the Japanese Grand Prix.
The second practice session at Suzuka was disrupted multiple times, with four red flags in total, two of which were caused by fire breaking out alongside the track.
The first fire started near the exit of the Turn 11 hairpin, apparently caused by sparks flying off the underside of the cars and landing in the dry grass next to the track.
Just a few minutes later, a second and larger fire broke out near Turn 13. Both incidents were quickly handled by trackside marshals, but they caused significant delays during the one-hour session.
These scenes were similar to what happened during last year’s Chinese Grand Prix practice, and with more dry weather expected on Saturday, the FIA is taking the situation seriously. Although the cause is still under investigation, it is believed that sparks from the titanium skid blocks underneath the cars likely ignited the dry grass.
What might seem funny at first glance, grass catching fire during an F1 session poses a real safety concern. Any fire near the track requires immediate attention from marshals, and that means red flags in practice or at the very least a safety car during a race. That is why the FIA is now looking into preventive measures to avoid further disruption during the rest of the weekend.
The statement reads: "While we continue to look into the fires that occurred during FP2, our focus before tomorrow will be on taking preemptive measures.
"The grass has been cut as short as possible, and loose, dried grass has been removed from affected areas.
"Prior to tomorrow's sessions, the grass will be dampened, and specific response teams will be stationed around the track."
