News.gp journalist and a girl with big dreamsFormula 1 is planning to change the Monaco Grand Prix by introducing more mandatory pit stops to make the race more exciting.
The F1 Commission has agreed on a plan to increase the number of required pit stops beyond one, hoping this will add more strategy and action to a race that is often processional with little overtaking.
Monaco has always been a track where drivers can easily manage their tyres because of its slow corners. Under current rules, teams must make at least one pit stop and use two different tyre compounds in a dry race. However, with F1 cars getting bigger and wider, overtaking on Monaco’s narrow streets has become even harder, making the race less exciting for fans.
The issue was clear in the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix when Charles Leclerc won his first home race by leading from pole position without much challenge. There were only four overtakes during the entire race, and an early red flag meant many drivers could avoid making a pit stop, reducing strategy options.
Since Monaco’s contract with F1 is secured until at least 2031, the sport’s officials want to make sure the race remains entertaining.
“With the aim of promoting better racing at the Monaco Grand Prix, the commission discussed proposals for Monaco-specific regulations,” says an official statement.
“The commission agreed to increase the number of mandatory pit stops in the race.
“These proposals will be further discussed by the Sporting Advisory Committee in the coming weeks.”
The exact details, such as how many pit stops will be required and how the rule will be enforced, are still being discussed. Teams will have the chance to provide feedback before a final decision is made. If approved, the change could make the Monaco GP more unpredictable and exciting, giving fans more action to watch on race day.
