Starting in 2025, Formula 1 will no longer award point for the fastest lap, while rookie drivers will receive more chances to participate in practice sessions.
Starting from the 2025 season, Formula 1 will stop awarding the extra point for the fastest lap, as decided in a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council on Thursday.
The one-point bonus was reintroduced in 2019 for drivers who achieve the fastest lap and finish in the top 10 during each grand prix.
However, the fastest lap point didn’t really fulfill its goal of making the races more exciting. It often went to drivers who had a big lead over the car behind them, allowing them to make a late pit stop for fresh tires and claim the point.
The rule gained extra attention once again during last month's Singapore Grand Prix when Daniel Ricciardo from Red Bull's sister team, RB, stole the fastest lap from Lando Norris, even though he was not in the top 10 to earn the bonus point.
Since Norris is competing for the championship against Max Verstappen, who drives for Red Bull's main team, this has raised concerns about the rule and how it can benefit teams that have dual ownership in F1.
In addition, another change has been approved at the same meeting, which will give young drivers more track time as Formula 1 will double the current time for them.
Since 2022, each team must include a driver with two or fewer grand prix starts in one practice session, providing two opportunities per season. Beginning in 2025, this will increase to four opportunities in the first free practice sessions.
