News.GP journalist who’s all about the thrilling worlds of MotoGP and Formula 1.Enea Bastianini reflects on his MotoGP career with Ducati and admits that to challenge for the title, he needs to bring more explosivity to his performances. As he prepares for a new chapter with Tech3 KTM, the Italian rider sets his sights on future improvements.
Enea Bastianini believes that he needs to have more energetic performances on track, following his four-year adventure with Ducati.
Having spent his entire MotoGP career with Ducati, Bastianini is set to part ways with the Italian manufacturer at the end of 2024, as he will join Tech3 KTM for a new chapter.
Bastianini made a strong impression during 2021 and 2022 with his speed and skill on the satellite bike, which earned him a promotion to Ducati's factory team for the 2023 season. However, his first year with the factory team was marked by long injury breaks. Despite winning races in 2024, Bastianini finished fourth in the championship.
Reflecting on his time with Ducati, Bastianini expressed satisfaction, though he admitted he lacked the necessary edge to consistently challenge the front-runners. When asked about his favorite moments with the team, Bastianini said, "Not from the '23 season, but for the rest, it was good. Every year gave me different motivation, starting with 2021 at Avintia, where the bike was very difficult. But in Misano, I brought it to the podium in consecutive races."
He continued, "I won for the first time with Gresini in Qatar, and 2022 was probably my best season. In 2023, there weren’t any memorable moments. But in 2024, I found much more consistency compared to the previous year, always fighting at the front. However, I still felt that I lacked the explosivity. I need to work on that for the future."
Despite these challenges, Bastianini was pleased with his four consecutive years at Ducati. Known for his remarkable late-race pace, he finished on the podium nine times across 20 races and also secured two sprint race victories. However, qualifying was often a struggle, and his average starting position was 6.6, despite achieving pole in the Portuguese Grand Prix.
Bastianini acknowledged the need for greater consistency to compete for the title, but he remains confident in his ability to perform better in the seasons ahead.
"My potential is probably very close to Pecco’s and Jorge’s," he said, referring to teammates Francesco Bagnaia and reigning champion Jorge Martin. "But too often, I wasn’t consistent and missed something. When I wasn’t at the front, it was usually due to poor qualifying, and I couldn’t make up for it in the race. The next race would be the opposite. That’s not good for the title. If you want to win, you have to change this approach."
He added, "I hope to have better luck in the future because I know I can achieve more than what I did in 2024."
