TRACK OVERVIEW

Opened in 1991, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is known for being a testing ground due to its varied layout. It has a total length of 4.657 km (2.893 miles) with 16 turns and a maximum elevation change of around 30 meters.

  • Race distance: 66 laps (total distance of 307.236km)
  • Lap record: 1:16.330 by Max Verstappen (2023)
  • Most wins: Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton (6)
  • Most pole positions: Michael Schumacher (7)

KEY SECTIONS OF THE CIRCUIT

  • Turn 1 – Elf Chicane: After a long straight, cars brake hard to enter the Elf chicane. Overtaking is common here as it’s one of the best spots for passing.
  • Turn 3 – Renault: A long, sweeping right-hander that demands strong downforce. It tests the car's aerodynamic efficiency.
  • Turn 9 – Campsa: A fast right-hand corner, Campsa challenges the car’s balance and provides thrilling action when drivers push the limits.
  • Turn 10 – La Caixa: This corner has been reprofiled in recent years, creating a sharper braking zone, which offers an excellent opportunity for overtaking.
  • Turn 14-15 – New Holland: The final chicane before the main straight, which tests the car’s mechanical grip and can affect the momentum going into the high-speed straight.

BEST GRANDSTANDS FOR SPECTATORS

1. Main Grandstand (Start&Finish Line):

  • Pros: Offers a view of the starting grid, pit lane, and the high-speed action down the main straight. You can also see the drama of the start and finish.
  • Cons: Limited views of other track sections.

2. Grandstands E, F, K, J + T1, A (Turn 1-2):

  • Pros: Located at the end of the main straight, this is one of the best places for watching overtaking. You’ll see cars battling through the tight corners of the Elf chicane.
  • Cons: It’s further from the pit action.

3. Grandstands S, S2, N (Turn 9):

  • Pros: Give a great view of the high-speed Turn 9 and the upcoming DRS zone. You’ll see drivers pushing the car’s limits as they negotiate this sweeping corner.
  • Cons: No view of the main straight.

4. Grandstand T10 (Turn 10 – La Caixa):

  • Pros: Perfect for watching late-braking overtakes and cars fighting through one of the most technical parts of the circuit.
  • Cons: Limited view of other sections.

5. General Admission:

  • Pros: Affordable and allows flexibility to move around the circuit. Some general admission areas, especially around Turn 4 and Turn 5, offer great viewing spots.
  • Cons: Requires early arrival to secure good positions, and you might need to stand.

HOW TO GET TO THE TRACK

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is located about 32 km (20 miles) from Barcelona city center.

  • By Car: The circuit is easily accessible via the AP-7 motorway. There is parking available, but it can get congested on race days, so arrive early. For more details about parking click HERE.
  • By Train: Trains from Barcelona Sants or Passeig de Gràcia to Montmeló station are convenient. From Montmeló station, the circuit is about a 30-minute walk.
  • By Bus: Special shuttle buses run from Barcelona to the circuit during race weekends, offering a more direct option than walking from the train station.

RACE DAY TIPS

  • Arrive Early: With thousands of fans pouring in, early arrival ensures a smooth entry and the chance to explore the venue.
  • Prepare for the Weather: Spanish weather can get pretty hot, and there is limited shade around the track, so bring sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses. On the other hand, it can also start rain out of nowhere so bring your raincoat even that the forecast doesn’t predict any rain.
  • Pack Snacks and Water: Though there are food stalls and vendors, prices can be high. Carrying your own snacks and a refillable water bottle can make the day more enjoyable.
  • Explore the Fan Zone: The circuit offers various activities, including merchandise stands, interactive experiences, and food trucks. Don’t miss out on exploring those!
  • Ear Protection: F1 cars are loud, so earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones are recommended, especially for children.
  • Take Advantage of the Free Practice Sessions: If you have tickets for multiple days, Friday’s practice sessions are more relaxed, allowing you to explore different viewing areas and get closer to the action.
  • Bring Your Portable Charger: With a long day at the track, your phone battery will drain much quicker due to taking photos, videos, and navigating to the circuit.
  • Plan Your Exit Strategy: After the race, expect heavy traffic as thousands of spectators leave the circuit, so if you're driving, consider leaving early to avoid congestion, and if using public transport, be prepared for crowded trains and buses.

WHERE TO STAY

  • Barcelona: Many fans opt to stay in Barcelona and commute to the track each day. Barcelona offers a wide range of accommodation options, from budget-friendly hostels to luxury hotels. Plus, you get to enjoy the city's vibrant culture and nightlife.
  • Montmeló: For those who prefer to stay closer to the circuit, Montmeló has some smaller hotels and guesthouses, but they fill up quickly during race weekends.
