From Marc Marquez aiming to dominate on a factory Ducati to Jorge Martin’s bold move to Aprilia, and Pedro Acosta’s much-anticipated debut, fans are eager to see how the action unfolds
The 2025 season is drawing closer, and waves of predictions are emerging, sparking conversations about the riders, teams, and potential shake-ups. While optimism surrounds many competitors, it appears that reigning champion Jorge Martin will face an uphill battle.
Martin Joins Aprilia
The new season introduces a much-changed grid, with reigning champion Jorge Martin leaving Ducati to join Aprilia. The bold move signals a fresh challenge for Martin, but it comes with significant risks, as Aprilia’s recent performance struggles have raised doubts about their ability to close the gap to Ducati’s dominance.
Veteran rider and analyst Marco Melandri expressed skepticism about Martin’s prospects for defending his title on Aprilia machinery. “I honestly don’t think they can close such a significant gap on Ducati within a single season,” he noted. “The last time Aprilia won was in Barcelona, but even then, Ducati was close behind.”
Despite Martin’s talent, Melandri doesn’t see him as a consistent threat on Aprilia. “Jorge is not Maverick Viñales or Aleix Espargaró,” he said, hinting at the considerable adjustments Martin will need to make.
Marquez: The Man to Beat
Meanwhile, Marc Marquez has secured a factory Ducati seat alongside the team’s star rider Francesco Bagnaia. The duo is widely expected to lead the grid, with some predicting a thrilling battle between the two.
Melandri is convinced that Marquez will shine. Speaking to GPOne, he said, “Marquez will be the man to beat. He doesn’t make mistakes when it counts, and even when things go wrong, he manages to turn them around. He crashes more than others, but it’s typically during practice when it matters less.”
Melandri added that Martin’s potential success could act as a motivator for Bagnaia. “If Martin gets the better of him, it might fuel Pecco’s response and reinforce his drive. But I think Marc will ultimately reap the rewards.”
Acosta in a Factory Team
Eyes are also on Pedro Acosta, who is emerging as a future MotoGP superstar.
However, Melandri doesn’t have high expectations for Acosta in 2025, citing KTM’s current struggles. “If the bike improves, yes, he could contend. But KTM isn’t in a golden moment right now.”
Acosta’s potential, however, is undeniable. “With Viñales and Enea Bastianini as teammates, we’ll get a clearer picture of his level,” Melandri explained. “If he were on a Ducati, he’d already be fighting at the front.”
The Drama Ahead
The 2025 MotoGP season promises excitement, with Marquez eager to make his mark, Martin stepping into a new team, and young talents like Acosta working to secure their place in the sport. As the lights go out on the first race, the answers to these predictions will begin to unfold.
