Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso focuses on securing his third F1 title while discussing his future plans and explaining why he finds the Dakar Rally more appealing than the Indianapolis 500.
Fernando Alonso is without a doubt the most experienced driver on the 2024 Formula 1 grid. He made his debut with Minardi in 2001 and initially retired in 2017. However, he returned to the sport in 2021 with Alpine, the team he then left in 2023 to join Aston Martin.
Earlier this year, the two-time world champion extended his contract with the British team, ensuring his stay until at least the 2026 season. The deal also includes an ambassadorial role that will keep him connected with the manufacturer beyond his racing career.
At 43, the Spanish driver remains determined to secure a third world championship before retiring, as his team has strengthened its technical lineup with the addition of Red Bull design legend Adrian Newey, who Alonso respects very much.
“I'm very, very focused [on] Formula 1 now. For the next two or three years, I want to win the third world title. This is my first and only priority at the moment,” Alonso said at an event of Aston Martin’s sponsor Cognizant.
Alonso has also attempted the Indy 500 three times, specifically in 2017, 2019, and 2020. In his first attempt, he finished 24th, while two years later, he failed to qualify. His final attempt in 2020 was his best performance at the iconic race, but he still only managed to secure 21st place.
It is kind of suggesting that the Spaniard might try to aim for the prestigious 'Triple Crown,' awarded to a driver who wins the iconic F1 Monaco Grand Prix, the Indy 500, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans—of which Alonso is only missing an Indy 500 victory. However, he has no immediate plans to pursue that goal.
“I attempted Indy 500 three times and didn't succeed. It's the only one missing [from the triple crown]. But at the moment, it's not in my plan.
“I will be 45, 46, I think the commitment that it will require to go to the Indy 500, the amount of learning that I will have to redo again... it will be a little bit too much. Or it's what I think now, I cannot say 100%.”
Rather than returning to the Indianapolis Circuit, the F1 veteran is more likely to pursue another shot at victory in the Dakar Rally, where he previously participated in 2020, finishing 13th with Toyota.
“I think my next biggest challenge will be the Dakar," he stated.
"If I can win Dakar, I think it will be hugely rewarding for me personally because I can win in Formula 1, I can win in endurance racing, win in Le Mans and Daytona, and if I can win in rally as well, it will mean a lot for me as a driver.”
Following a successful season last year in which Alonso achieved eight podium finishes, this year has been more challenging, with the best finish being P5 at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Currently sitting ninth in the drivers’ standings with 62 points, he remains optimistic about the 2025 season.
