The rookie Fermin Aldeguer has received a long lap penalty for Sunday’s Grand Prix in Argentina after a crash in the sprint race. That crash sent both riders off their bikes, and Miguel Oliveira suffered injuries, requiring him to be sent to the hospital.
The incident happened on lap 4 when Aldeguer attempted to overtake Oliveira. However, this move led to a collision and raised fears that Oliveira might have suffered a broken collarbone. However, after medical check-ups, it was confirmed that he had no fractures. Despite this good news, Oliveira will fly back to Europe for further medical evaluations, as he has not been deemed fit for the race.
Aldeguer, who has taken full responsibility for the crash, apologized for the incident.
“I tried to overtake [Oliveira] as quickly as possible to regain my position,” Aldeguer admitted. “Unfortunately, I made contact with him. I sincerely apologize to Miguel and the Pramac team—it was never my intention to cause an accident.”
This marks the first time Aldeguer has been penalized in MotoGP. The stewards ruled that the cause of the incident was contact with another rider, resulting in Oliveira’s crash. Since this is his first penalty, Aldeguer will only serve a long lap penalty.
