News.gp journalist and a girl with big dreamsFerrari’s Charles Leclerc used foul language during the FIA’s post-race press conference after the Mexican GP, which might lead to a punishment similar to Max Verstappen’s from Singapore.
The FIA has recently tightened its rules around driver swearing, using Article 12.2.1k of its International Sporting Code, which penalizes words or actions that could damage the FIA’s reputation or values.
This followed FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem statement that “F1 drivers are not rappers” and appeal on using respectful language, aiming to shield FIA officials from abusive fan reactions. However, some see it as limiting driver expression.
Despite some people seeing it as limiting driver expression, Max Verstappen was the first to be penalized under this rule after he swore during a Singapore press conference, resulting in a community service requirement.
Now, Charles Leclerc might face a similar punishment. After the Mexican Grand Prix, at the FIA press conference, the Monegasque let out an expletive when discussing a near miss at the Peraltada corner.
“I had one oversteer, and then when I recovered from that oversteer, I had an oversteer from the other side, and then I was like, 'F***!'.”
He then quickly realized and apologised for his language but it might still be too late.
“Sorry! Oh no! Oh nooo! I don’t want to join Max,” Leclerc laughed it off.
The FIA is currently reviewing whether Leclerc’s language will lead to a penalty similar to Verstappen’s. While there’s no decision yet, this stricter stance on language shows the FIA’s intent to control driver conduct, especially in high-profile settings like press conferences.
