Alex Rins' mixed performances since he returned from a leg injury at the Mugello round raise questions about Yamaha's confidence in him. Despite these doubts, Yamaha signed Rins while he was still recovering and later extended his contract until 2026. This decision suggests Yamaha sees potential in a rider who currently poses more uncertainties than guarantees.

No MotoGP team intentionally complicates matters, especially one with Yamaha's track record. Thus, there must be a compelling reason to recruit a rider whose abilities are uncertain. Rins' talent is unquestionable; over his eight years in MotoGP, he has secured six wins and 18 podiums. However, concerns remain about how his serious injuries from the Mugello crash have affected his riding. Since then, he has undergone multiple surgeries to regain full fitness.

The timing of Rins' accident was particularly unfortunate. Earlier in 2023, he claimed an unexpected victory at the Americas GP on a Honda. This surprising win occurred amid a chaotic rider market, marking Rins' signing with Yamaha even more unexpected, especially given the uncertainty surrounding his physical condition. Overall, he raced only seven times out of 20 in 2023.

Rins' contract was extended a few months ago and attracted additional scrutiny, particularly after he suffered another injury from a fall at Assen, which resulted in fractures to his leg and wrist. At that point, Rins had accumulated just eight points in eight races, with his best finish being 13th, well below his teammate Fabio Quartararo. Given Rins' struggles, it was surprising that Yamaha chose to extend his contract for another two years, raising questions about what Yamaha sees in Rins. Even the rider himself admits that this question is valid considering his recent performance.

For now, Yamaha is focused on improving the M1 and reviving its satellite team by 2025. With various chassis and engine configurations in the works, including the new V4 engines, momentum is building at Yamaha. Rins' experience and insights may justify Yamaha's decision to sign him despite his injuries.
