While Sergio Perez seems to get dropped by Red Bull after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Franco Colapinto is no longer considered as his potential replacement, Christian Horner confirmed.
Franco Colapinto’s chances of getting a full-time Formula 1 seat for 2025 seem to have slipped away.
After a strong start with Williams, where he replaced Logan Sargeant and scored points in Azerbaijan and the United States, his form has dropped in recent races. Mistakes, including costly crashes in Brazil and Las Vegas, have raised concerns about whether he is ready for a bigger role, leading both Red Bull and Alpine to lose interest.
Red Bull had been open about evaluating Colapinto, as the team was looking at him to replace Sergio Perez, whose poor performances in 2024 put his next year's seat at risk.
Colapinto’s quick adjustment to F1 and the big support he brought from South America made him an appealing choice at first. However, Red Bull wanted him to meet certain goals, like matching his teammate Alex Albon, and as the season went on, his results fell short.
At the same time, Red Bull drivers like Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar showed strong performances, making them better options for the team.
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner praised Colapinto’s potential and said he believes the young driver will make it to the F1 grid in the future.
However, he also pointed out the strength of Red Bull’s current young drivers, showing the team is more focused on promoting talent from within, confirming that Colapinto won’t be driving for either of their teams in 2025.
"He [Franco Colapinto], for sure, is a talent that's looking to earn his permanent place in Formula 1," he said, quoted by RacingNews365.
"We have a great pool of talent within the Red Bull junior team," he added.
"I'm sure Franco will find his way onto the grid in the future."
He continued: "You're always keeping your eye on what the market is in all teams.
"But we have the strength and depth in the junior programme.
"[It] was good to see Isack doing a good job in Formula 2 as well. I think there's what, half a point between drivers going into the final race in Abu Dhabi."
"Liam [Lawson] and Yuki [Tsunoda], very closely matched in that race [the Qatar Grand Prix] in terms of pace. So, we've got a full stable of drivers."
