The reigning champion Max Verstappen, who only managed to secure P6 in this year’s Italian Grand Prix, was very frustrated with his RB20 and team magement as we might’ve heard on the brodcasted ‘be awake’ radio message to his engineer.

“Can people in the background please be awake? I know this is a s*** position, but it’s important,” Verstappen said to his engineer during the race.

Verstappen later explained to the media, that the message was about a setting change on his RB20, which needs to be done from the pitwall. The issue was regarding his battery, which depleted while defending against Lando Norris. In that case the driver usually goes into a “slower setting”, to save his battery to fight back later. When he is capable of doing that, the team has to tell him, as they are the ones, who have all the data. However, instead of Red Bull telling Verstappen to switch back to the "quicker setting," the Dutchman had to ask if he could do it and only after that, the team confirmed that he could.

“In the race my battery was relatively empty, while fighting Lando of course,” he said. “Then I had to go to a certain setting,” Verstappen said.

“At some point, they have to tell me when I can go back to the quicker setting. I ask: ‘Can I go back?’ ‘Oh yeah, yeah you can.’

“Then I thought, ‘What is this? You guys have all the data the entire time, you guys can exactly see when I can make those steps. I shouldn’t have to ask when I can go back. We might be in no man’s land, but you still have to be on top of things. Otherwise, I can just stay home,” he said with frustration.

Red Bull is now fully focused on fixing the current issues of RB20 so they can bounce back as soon as possible and turn the battle for both championships in their favor.
