Helmut Marko has confirmed that an announcement about Red Bull’s 2025 driver line-ups will come soon, as speculation about Sergio Perez’s future continues.
Sergio Perez’s future at Red Bull is in doubt after a disastrous season that saw the Mexican driver struggle to deliver consistent results.
Since the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in May, Perez managed to score just 48 points across 17 races, contributing to Red Bull's unexpected drop to third place in the Constructors' Championship standings behind McLaren and Ferrari.
Despite signing a two-year contract extension before the Canadian Grand Prix, Perez’s inability to meet expectations has put his position at risk, with even Perez himself confirming ongoing discussions with Red Bull regarding his future.
Reports suggest Red Bull has offered Perez an ambassadorial role, similar to the one David Coulthard has held since his retirement, which would allow the Mexican driver to maintain ties with the brand while stepping away from his race seat.
Red Bull is now actively exploring its options for 2025, with Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda emerging as the top candidates to replace Perez, with the New Zealander being seen as the most likely option.
The team’s senior management held a meeting last Monday and a week later Helmut Marko, a key figure in Red Bull’s driver decisions, has indicated that an announcement about Perez’s future could come soon.
“We will be announcing news on the driver pairing for next year in the next few days,” Marko wrote in his regular SpeedWeek column.
Due to the Mexican driver's lucrative contract and strong financial backing, rumours swirled around that he is asking for a hefty buy-out fee of around $20 million. However, Marko also dismissed these claims.
“There’s a lot of speculation about this. Including rumours about possible transfer fees, which are complete nonsense.”
If either Lawson or Tsunoda moves up to partner Verstappen next season, Isack Hadjar, this year’s F2 runner-up, is expected to take the vacant seat in the sister team.
