News.gp journalist and a girl with big dreamsFranco Colapinto is reportedly close to securing a reserve driver position at Alpine, with rumours suggesting he could step in as a mid-season replacement for Jack Doohan.
Jack Doohan’s F1 career hasn’t even properly started, yet rumours are already swirling that he could be replaced sooner rather than later.
The Australian made his debut at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, replacing Esteban Ocon, and is expected to race again in Melbourne, but his long-term future at Alpine is less certain.
Franco Colapinto’s name has come back into the spotlight after a strong but short spell in F1 last year. The Argentine driver joined Williams mid-season, replacing Logan Sargeant, and quickly impressed by scoring points in just his second race in Baku.
However, a series of crashes ruined his already slim chances of securing a seat, with Carlos Sainz filling his spot at Williams for 2025 long before. Despite this, Colapinto’s talent caught the attention of other teams, including Alpine.
Reports now suggest that Colapinto is close to joining Alpine as a reserve driver. If the deal goes ahead, he would join Ryo Hirakawa and Paul Aron in a backup role.
However, Colapinto’s position seems stronger than his rivals, as rumours claim Doohan’s contract includes a performance clause. This means Alpine could replace him mid-season if his results aren’t good enough, giving Colapinto a real chance to step into a race seat.
It’s unclear whether Williams would release Colapinto outright or simply loan him to Alpine. Colapinto also brings valuable sponsorship from Argentina and Latin America, which Williams might lose if he leaves. This could lead to Alpine paying Williams compensation, which is rare for a reserve driver.
Alpine advisor Flavio Briatore added to the fire when he said that Doohan will start the 2025 season alongside Pierre Gasly, but hinted that things could change later in the year.
For Colapinto, joining Alpine as a reserve driver could be his route back to the grid. His contract may also include a clause allowing him to explore other options if he isn’t offered a race seat.
