Francesco Bagnaia has expressed frustration with MotoGP race officials after a yellow flag mistake cost him a direct spot in Q2 during the Thai Grand Prix practice. The Ducati rider was on a crucial lap when his time was wrongly deleted, forcing him to fight through Q1. While Franco Morbidelli also played a role in disrupting his session, Bagnaia believes the real issue lies with race direction’s costly error.
Francesco Bagnaia has revealed that he is more upset with race officials than with Franco Morbidelli after missing out on Q2 during the Thai Grand Prix practice.
Bagnaia was on his fast lap in the final minutes of Friday's practice when he encountered Morbidelli on the racing line at Turn 5. This forced him to abandon his lap, but for him, the bigger issue was a mistaken yellow flag, which led to his previous lap time being deleted.
Mistake from Race Direction
Bagnaia had clocked a 1m29.492s lap, which would have placed him ninth overall, securing a direct spot in Q2. However, the officials deleted his time, believing he had improved under yellow flag conditions.
At first, it was believed that the yellow flag was due to Marco Bezzecchi’s crash at Turn 3, but replays showed that Bagnaia had already passed that area before Bezzecchi fell.
After the session, Bagnaia confronted race control stewards, who admitted their mistake but said they couldn’t restore his time. This meant Bagnaia dropped to 13th place and now has to fight his way up from Q1.
"I'm more angry with race direction than with Franky (Morbidelli) because they made a huge mistake," Bagnaia told Autosport. "They put yellow flags from Turn 3 to Turn 8 by mistake—nobody had crashed there. They admitted it, but they told me they can’t give back my lap time. That’s not fair."
MotoGP Race Director Issues Apology
MotoGP race director Mike Webb later issued a public apology, calling it a human error.
"The yellow flag was incorrectly displayed on Bagnaia’s lap, and we are very unhappy about this situation," the statement read. "When a rider passes a yellow flag, their lap is automatically canceled. We cannot reverse that decision, but we do apologize to Pecco and the Ducati Lenovo Team."
