Ducati team manager Davide Tardozzi shares his concerns over Francesco Bagnaia's position in the MotoGP standings, highlighting the frustration of having won half the races yet sitting second. He emphasizes the need for error reduction and commends Jorge Martin's maturity and consistency as the championship leader.
Davide Tardozzi, Ducati team manager, has publicly expressed his frustration that Francesco Bagnaia is currently second in the championship standings, despite him winning half of the races this season. Bagnaia secured his ninth victory at last weekend's Thailand Grand Prix, successfully defending against a challenge from Marc Marquez early in the race. However, with only two rounds remaining, he faces a significant 17-point gap to Jorge Martin, who has three wins this season.
Bagnaia’s title hopes have been hindered by a series of crashes in both races and sprints, along with some unfortunate circumstances. Tardozzi emphasized the need for both Bagnaia and the factory team to minimize mistakes in their pursuit of Martin in the championship.
“What bothers me a little is that Pecco has won half the races and is still second in the championship. This is something we need to reflect on for the future,” Tardozzi told Motorsport.com Italy. “We’ve made too many mistakes in races, and that can’t continue. Still, having a rider who has won half the races is significant. Pecco is making history; right now, he’s outperforming a great like Casey Stoner, so thank you, Pecco!”
Tardozzi also praised Martin, noting his maturity since last year’s unsuccessful challenge. He believes Martin has learned to accept the best possible outcomes on race days, which has led to increasing his consistency and a notable decrease in crashes.
“After last year’s championship loss, Jorge has really worked on his emotional resilience,” Tardozzi said. “I think he made significant progress on a mental level last winter, and it's evident in his performances. It’s no surprise he’s leading the championship now; when he needs to settle for a result, he does, which is something he wouldn’t have done in the past. We have to commend Jorge Martin for his efforts.”
