Lewis Hamilton's long-time race engineer, Peter Bonnington, commonly known as “Bono”, has been assigned a new role at Mercedes and will not accompany the seven-time Formula 1 world champion to Ferrari for the 2025 season.
Peter Bonnington, commonly known as 'Bono', is a man with lots of experience and an outstanding career in Formula 1. He started his journey with Jordan, later on moved to Honda, and in 2009, was a data engineer when Jenson Button won his world champion title. After that, he gained valuable experience as Michael Schumacher's race engineer for three years. Bonnington then partnered with Lewis Hamilton, helping him win 6 titles over 12 seasons. He got stuck in lots of fan’s heads because of his famous radio exchanges with Hamilton, such as “It’s Hammer Time!”, or “Get in there Lewis!”
Although their partnership is ending, Mercedes has kept Bono in a new role as head of race engineers, with a pay raise starting this weekend, which probably helped him to make up his mind about the upcoming season. While his exact duties are still unclear, the position should be reportedly similar to the one of Max Verstappen’s race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, generally known as 'GP'.
Bonnington will remain with Hamilton until the end of this season in the role of his race engineer. Next year, he is expected to mentor rising star Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who will make his debut at Monza in 2 weeks and is expected to be announced as a Mercedes second driver for the 2025 season soon.
Lewis Hamilton will now have to get used to heading a different voice in his radio. His new race engineer at Ferrari is most likely going to be Riccardo Adami, who has been Carlos Sainz’s race engineer since 2021 and has also worked with Sebastian Vettel before. According to rumours, Hamilton was in contact with Vettel regarding Adami, asking him about his qualities and Vettel assured him that he is going to be in good hands.
