News.GP journalist who’s all about the thrilling worlds of MotoGP and Formula 1.Aprilia is questioning Michelin's explanation regarding tire temperature issues after Jorge Martin's highside crash during the preseason test in Malaysia. The team is pushing for more transparency and safety measures after the reigning champion sustained multiple fractures.
Aprilia is demanding more answers from Michelin, as the team disagrees with Michelin’s theory that a drop in tire temperature caused the incident.
Jorge Martin, the reigning champion, had a highside crash on the first day of preseason testing in Malaysia. He landed face-first on the ground, taking a hard hit. Michelin later explained that a sensor showed that Martin's rear tire was 15°C cooler than it should have been.
This statement came after Aprilia’s motorsport boss, Massimo Rivola, raised concerns. He questioned whether an old tire might have been used, hinting that Michelin could be responsible for the crash.
“The data proves the bike was fine, and Jorge didn’t make a mistake. I’ve asked Michelin for the tire’s history. I wouldn’t want to find out it had been sitting for 11 months,” Rivola said.
Now, Aprilia is pushing back against Michelin’s explanation. The team wants a group discussion with all teams, calling the situation critical.
“Our data doesn’t support Michelin’s claims,” Rivola stated. “Rider safety must come first. I’ve asked for a meeting with all teams to address this serious issue, especially given the number of injuries.”
Martin sustained multiple fractures, one in his right hand and several in his left foot. After spending the night in a hospital near Sepang, he flew back to Barcelona for surgery.
On Friday, Dr. Xavier Mir performed surgery on Martin’s right hand at Quirón Clinic. The operation went well. Fortunately, the fractures in his left foot didn’t require surgery.
“The surgery fixed a displaced fracture in his right hand with a screw,” Dr. Mir explained. “His recovery will start soon, depending on his condition.”
It was confirmed that Martin will miss out on the next week’s Bahrain test, while Trackhouse Aprilia rider Raul Fernandez should be able to come back.
