MotoGP champion Jorge Martin was taken to hospital after a high-speed crash during the Qatar Grand Prix, cutting short his much-anticipated return to racing. Despite showing strong pace earlier in the weekend, the Aprilia rider’s comeback ended with a chest injury and a trip to the medical center
Jorge Martin has been taken to hospital after he had a crash during the race in Qatar, having bad luck at what was meant to be his official return.
Martin, despite the long break, showed really good results. He qualified 14th and was just so close to reaching Q2. He had a decent start to the sprint, being close to the top 10 before he fell back into 16th.
On Sunday, it was far more challenging for him. He had struggled outside the points before he crashed on lap 14 at Turn 12. He was immediately attended to by track marshals and then taken to the medical center for a check-up.
Aprilia confirmed that while Martin didn’t suffer injuries to his arms or legs, he did take a hit to the chest. The team released a short statement saying the following:
“Jorge Martin suffered chest trauma. He is conscious and has no limb injuries. He has a rib contusion on the right side of his chest along with a pneumothorax (a collapsed lung). He will be taken to the hospital for a CT scan to get a closer look.”
This was a tough day for Aprilia. Their top finisher was Marco Bezzecchi, who finished 10th, over 14 seconds behind race winner Marc Marquez.
The next round of the championship takes place in Jerez in two weeks, and Martin is likely looking forward to it—not only because of racing, but also for the scheduled post-race test on Monday.
