The 2024 US Grand Prix provided plenty of drama, with standout performances and major disappointments across the field. From Charles Leclerc's masterful victory and Ferrari's dominant one-two finish to Lando Norris' missed opportunity and Lewis Hamilton's race-ending spin, the weekend was filled with excitement. Here's a breakdown of the winners and losers from Austin.
Winner: Charles Leclerc
Charles Leclerc perfectly capitalized on the situation as he overtook both Lando Norris and Max Verstappen at Turn 1 to take the lead from his starting position of P4, securing one of the most skilled victories of his career. This was his second win from fourth place, the first being in Monza last month.
Overall, this was his third victory of the season, helping him close the gap to Norris to 22 points in the Drivers' Standings.
Loser: Lando Norris
Even though Norris delivered what he called the best lap of his career to take pole position, his McLaren appeared to be the third-best car in terms of one-lap pace. Despite starting from pole, he was unable to claim victory, losing the lead on the opening lap and dropping to fourth.
Norris managed his tires well enough to close in on Verstappen, but the team's decision not to give back the position after he overtook Verstappen cost him third place, as he was penalized for leaving the track and gaining an advantage.
Winner: Ferrari
Ferrari managed to control tire degradation, which ultimately helped them secure a one-two finish in their strongest performance of the season.
Ferrari is now only eight points behind Red Bull, trailing the leader by 41 points.
Loser: Lewis Hamilton
This weekend was one to forget for Hamilton, as he finished in Q1 during qualifying and spun into the gravel on Lap 6 of the race. This marked the first time he failed to finish a race in the United States.
Winner: Max Verstappen
The Dutchman returned to winning ways for the first time since Austria, as he triumphed in the US Sprint.
Even though he couldn’t challenge the Ferraris for victory, he still managed to claim third place, marking the first time since Belgium that he extended his championship lead.
Loser: Pierre Gasly
Gasly delivered a thrilling performance in what was Alpine’s best qualifying of the season with P7. However, despite defending his top-ten position, a slow pit stop cost him, and with new tires, he wasn’t as fast as before, dropping him outside the points.
Winner: Haas
Even though Kevin Magnussen didn’t score any points on Sunday, finishing 11th and 8th, Haas still managed to score points for the eighth time this season. The American team is taking many positives from their home race weekend. The seven points they earned helped them move up the standings to sixth, ahead of Red Bull. The team has now officially scored points in four consecutive races for the first time since 2018, and they can be confident as their upgrades are performing better than expected.
Loser: Kevin Magnussen
The weekend started well for Magnussen, as he took seventh place in the Sprint. But, like many in Q3, he was forced to back off when George Russell crashed at the end. He hoped to score points, but his fate was sealed when the team called him for a second pit stop, which ruled him out of the fight for points.
Winner: Liam Lawson
Lawson returned as he stepped in for Daniel Ricciardo in Austin, but his weekend was complicated by penalties for new engine components, sending him to the back of the grid.
However, he delivered a strong performance, managing a one-stop strategy and scoring points by finishing P9. Considering he started from 19th, it was an incredible performance from him.
Loser: Sauber
Sauber hoped to score points with their new upgrade package, with Valtteri Bottas running the new parts throughout the weekend. Even though it put them in a position to fight, they lacked the pace to sustain it over the race distance. In the end, they finished a lap down and without points.
Winner: Franco Colapinto
The Argentine driver delivered another thrilling performance, securing his second points finish in four races and helping Williams pull further ahead of Alpine in the standings.
Colapinto lost some positions at the start, moving him further away from the top ten, but he managed to fight back and, with a one-stop strategy, claimed tenth place.
Colapinto also briefly held the fastest lap, but it was snatched away by Esteban Ocon with three laps to go.
