TRACK OVERVIEW

The Lusail International Circuit, located just outside Doha, is a modern, high-speed track that has quickly become a staple in Formula 1. Originally built for MotoGP, it made its F1 debut in 2021 and has since undergone upgrades to enhance the racing spectacle. Featuring long straights and a mix of flowing and technical corners, the track provides an exciting challenge for both drivers and teams.

With a layout favoring high-speed stability and tyre management, the Lusail circuit places significant demands on drivers, especially with Qatar’s hot and dry conditions. The floodlit night race adds to the drama, creating a stunning visual experience for fans.

In 2023, the track received resurfacing and updated facilities to improve overtaking opportunities and enhance the overall fan experience. At 5.419 km (3.367 miles) long, it is a fast circuit with limited heavy braking zones but multiple DRS opportunities, making it a venue where strategy plays a crucial role.

  • Race distance: 57 laps (total distance of 308.611 km)
  • Lap record: 1:22.384 by Lando Norris (2024)
  • Most wins: Max Verstappen (2 victories)

KEY SECTIONS OF THE CIRCUIT

  • Turn 1: The most crucial overtaking spot, located at the end of the long main straight, where heavy braking can lead to intense battles.
  • Turns 2-3: A fast, flowing section with a Speed Trap positioned just before Turn 2.
  • Turn 4: A high-speed corner that sets up a rhythm for the technical middle sector.
  • Turns 5-6-7: A sequence of medium and high-speed sweeping bends that test car balance and tyre grip.
  • Turn 10: A tight left-hander that challenges braking stability, making it a tricky spot for overtaking attempts.
  • Turn 12: The start of the long, fast final sector, requiring commitment through the corners.
  • Turn 15: A crucial braking point before entering the last corner, featuring the DRS Detection Zone 1 right before it.
  • Turn 16: The final turn, leading onto the long main straight where DRS activation provides a key overtaking opportunity into Turn 1.

BEST GRANDSTANDS FOR SPECTATORS

  • Main Grandstand: Located along the start/finish straight, offering prime views of the grid, pit stops, and podium celebrations.
  • North Grandstand: Positioned near the first corner, providing an excellent vantage point for Turn 1 action, where overtakes and potential first-lap incidents often occur.
  • T2 & T3 Grandstands: Situated at the exit of Turn 1, these grandstands offer a great view of cars accelerating through the high-speed first sector.
  • T16 Grandstand: Overlooks the final corner, allowing fans to witness crucial race-deciding moments as drivers push for the best exit onto the long main straight.
  • General Admission (Walkabout Areas): Spread across various sections of the track, particularly along the straights and corners, offering a more flexible but limited viewing experience.

HOW TO GET TO THE TRACK

The Lusail International Circuit is located about 30 km north of Doha, with various transport options available:

  • Metro & Shuttle: Take the Doha Metro Red Line to Lusail Metro Station, then use the official shuttle service to the circuit. Fares start at 2 QAR (0.5 USD), with travel cards available at station vending machines.
  • Buses: Karwa buses connect key locations in Doha, with Karwa Smart Cards starting from 10 QAR (3 USD) for a two-ride option.
  • Taxi/Rideshare: Uber, Careem, and Karwa are available, but expect surge pricing and heavy demand on race day.
  • Driving & Parking: Limited parking is available close to the track, but arriving early is recommended.

RACE DAY TIPS

  • Arrive early: Enjoy fan zones, support races, and pre-race activities and avoid the most busy time before the main event.
  • Stay hydrated: Qatar’s desert climate can be extreme, even at night. Carry a refillable bottle for hydration stations.
  • Dress appropriately: Lightweight, breathable clothing is essential, and a poncho may be useful in case of unexpected weather.
  • Use sun protection: Despite the night race, afternoon sessions can still be hot—sunscreen and a hat are recommended.
  • Plan your exit: Traffic congestion is heavy post-race, so consider staying for post-race entertainment or dining in Lusail before heading back.

WHERE TO STAY

  • West Bay & The Pearl: Luxury hotels with stunning city views, offering easy access to Lusail and central Doha.
  • Lusail City: The closest accommodation to the circuit, with high-end hotels and new developments catering to F1 visitors.
  • Doha City Center: A mix of high-end and mid-range hotels, with great transport links to the track.
  • Al Sadd & Corniche: Budget-friendly hotels within a reasonable metro ride from Lusail.
