News.gp journalist and a girl with big dreamsStefano Domenicali was impressed after discussions with Thailand’s prime minister about the possibility of hosting a race in the country.
Formula 1 could be heading to Thailand in the near future, as the country continues to show interest in hosting a Grand Prix. Thailand already has a strong link to the sport, with Alex Albon racing under a Thai licence, and if the bid is successful, the race would likely be a street circuit in the capital city, Bangkok.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali recently traveled to Thailand after the Australian Grand Prix to meet with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and her team. They discussed plans for bringing Formula 1 to the country, and Domenicali was positive about the meeting.
“I was delighted to meet with Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the prime minister of Thailand, and her team today to discuss their impressive plans to host a race in Bangkok,” he said.
“I am looking forward to continuing our discussions in the weeks and months ahead.”
The current F1 calendar already has a record-breaking 24 races, but new locations could still be added through a rotation system. This system allows some races to take place only in certain seasons, as seen with Belgium, which will host races in four of the next six years. If Thailand joins, it could become part of this system rather than adding another full-time race to the schedule.
Thailand is not the only country hoping to join the calendar. Madrid is set to replace Barcelona as the host of the Spanish Grand Prix next year, and Rwanda has officially expressed interest in bringing F1 to Africa. South Korea and South Africa are also looking into hosting future races.
