Niels Wittich has stepped down from his F1 race director’s position and will be replaced by Rui Marques, as confirmed by the FIA.
The FIA has announced that Niels Wittich, who has been seving as Formula 1’ race director for almost 3 season, has stepped down from his position.
Wittich took on the role in 2022, stepping in for Michael Masi, who resigned after the controversial events of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where his decisions during the last and title-deciding race of the season, particularly regarding the handling of the safety car, sparked significant debate.
Wittich initially shared the duties with Eduardo Freitas before becoming the sole race director after the 2022 Japanese Grand Prix.
In a surprise move, the FIA confirmed Wittich’s departure, with the German stepping down to explore new opportunities. The announcement came just before the Las Vegas Grand Prix, and FIA staff were informed earlier this week.
In addition, it has also been confirmed that Rui Marques, who has worked as the race director for Formula 2 and Formula 3, will take over as F1's new race director for the remainder of the 2024 season and beyond.
The FIA statement read as follows:
“The FIA can confirm that Niels Wittich has stepped down from his position as F1 race director to pursue new opportunities.
“Niels has fulfilled his numerous responsibilities as race director with professionalism and dedication.
“We thank him for his commitment and we wish him the best for the future. Rui Marques will assume the role of race director from the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
“Rui brings a wealth of experience having previously served as track marshal, scrutineer, national and international steward, deputy race director and race director in various championships.
“Most recently, he held the position of Formula 2 and Formula 3 race director.”
