Alpine is trying to convince Mick Schumacher to stay in the WEC with the team, but the German driver wants to keep his chances of returning to F1 alive.

Mick Schumacher, the 2020 F2 champion and son of the well-known seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, entered Formula 1 in 2021 after signing a contract with Haas. From his very first race, he faced significant pressure, as the spotlight was on him due to his name, with high expectations for his performance.

However, he faced difficulties throughout his time at Haas, dealing with a car that lacked performance and challenges with his teammate Nikita Mazepin. Ultimately, he was let go after two years in 2022 and replaced by Nico Hulkenberg for not meeting the team's requirements.

Since then, he has struggled to secure another race seat. Although he joined Mercedes as a reserve driver for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, he was passed over for the 2025 role as Hamilton's replacement, with Andrea Kimi Antonelli chosen instead.

Williams also explored other options when Logan Sargeant was replaced by Franco Colapinto after the Dutch GP. Team principal James Vowles described Schumacher as "nothing special," but later clarified his comments and apologized to Schumacher.

Now it doesn’t even look like that Schumacher has a chance to get the Sauber/Audi seat for 2025 as the favourite one to secure it is the team’s current driver Valtteri Bottas or potentially young talent Gabriel Bortoleto, who is currently leading the F2 championship.

This season, in addition to his Mercedes reserve driver duties, Schumacher has been racing for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship, where he also scored third place with the team at the 6 hours of Fuji. Although Alpine wants to retain him in their programme for next year, the young German still has his hopes up for an F1 comeback in the future.

"Whatever happens for the future, will be decided at some point still this year, hopefully," said Schumacher quoted by Autosport after the WEC round in Japan.

"As soon as I know what I will be doing, I will for sure put a press release out there and let you all know.

"But definitely the hope is for Formula 1 because that is what I dreamt of since I was a little boy, but it definitely feels great to be in WEC,” he stated.
