Ducati test rider Michele Pirro will fill in for VR46 at the 2024 MotoGP season finale in Barcelona, stepping in for Fabio Di Giannantonio, who is recovering from recent shoulder surgery. Despite Andrea Iannone’s impressive return in Malaysia, Ducati has chosen Pirro for the season-ending race to focus on critical technical development for the upcoming GP25.
Ducati test rider Michele Pirro will step in for VR46 at the final round of the 2024 season in Barcelona, as reported by Motorsport.com. Pirro will race one of the GP23 machines during the Barcelona GP on November 15-17, replacing Fabio Di Giannantonio, who underwent shoulder surgery last Wednesday.
Andrea Iannone made a brilliant return last weekend, impressing the VR46 team with his performance. However, despite his strong showing, Iannone will not participate in the Barcelona event. Ducati made this decision, which will be officially announced next week.
Iannone has been absent from MotoGP since 2019. One of the expectations for Iannone’s return was that he wouldn’t struggle on the GP23. However, Ducati has opted for the experienced Pirro for the season finale, prioritizing technical and development needs.
In 2025, Ducati will reduce its lineup to just three factory GP25 bikes, compared to the four GP24 machines on the current grid. These three bikes will be piloted by Bagnaia, Marc Marquez, and Fabio Di Giannantonio. The upcoming Barcelona pre-season test is therefore critical for Ducati as the manufacturer prepares for the engine freeze. Pirro’s role in testing is considered crucial, especially since Marquez has limited experience on the GP24.
The production schedule for the GP25 is tight, and it’s uncertain whether all three planned units will be shipped to Spain or if only two will be available. Ducati is committed to having Pirro in Barcelona, as his input will be vital.
Ahead of the Barcelona event, Pirro is testing the GP25 at Jerez on Wednesday and Thursday. Following these test sessions, the bike will be shipped to Barcelona in preparation for the first official test of the 2025 season on November 19.
