This weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix will be a particularly emotional event for fans and drivers alike, as Lewis Hamilton prepares to honor Ayrton Senna by driving the iconic McLaren MP4/5B from 1990, when he won the championship over his biggest rival Alain Prost.

The demonstration run at Interlagos, scheduled for Saturday evening, is set to follow a day of F1 activities, including the sprint race and main qualifying session.

Hamilton’s tribute will be part of the “Senna Sempre” (Senna Always) event, paying homage to the Brazilian icon who remains one of the most beloved figures in Formula 1.

This tribute is especially meaningful as 2024 marks 30 years since Senna’s tragic passing at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994—a moment that shook the sport deeply.

The seven-time world champion has often said that Senna was one of his heroes and since starting his F1 career with McLaren in 2007, he has admired the Brazilian legend, making this tribute extra special.

Hamilton has already won three times at Interlagos, and last year, he was even made an honorary citizen of Brazil. Though he now races with Mercedes, his connection to Senna remains strong, and driving the car in front of Brazilian fans will be a full-circle moment for him.

Throughout this F1 season, several tributes have been made to Senna. Earlier this year, Sebastian Vettel drove Senna’s 1993 McLaren at Imola, with F1 drivers wearing Senna-themed gear in his honor.

McLaren also paid tribute by designing a special car livery for the Monaco Grand Prix in Senna’s classic yellow, green, and blue helmet colors.
