Jorge Martin and Pramac Racing have taken on the odds this MotoGP season, challenging Ducati’s powerhouse factory team led by Francesco Bagnaia. Heading into the Barcelona finale with a 24-point lead, Martin is within reach of his first championship title—an impressive feat for a satellite team rider.
Jorge Martin feels that he and his team have been “battling against the world” this season as they faced the challenge of competing against Francesco Bagnaia and factory team Ducati, a team renowned for winning.
With only the season finale remaining, Martin is on the verge of winning his first title, holding a 24-point lead. Historically, satellite teams like Pramac have been at a disadvantage compared to factory teams. However, Ducati has transformed the MotoGP scene in recent years by building closer partnerships with the satellite teams it supports.
Notably, Martin is contracted by Ducati and races on the same GP24 bike as Bagnaia and Enea Bastianini in the factory team, giving him parity in equipment.
Nevertheless, while the difference between satellite and factory teams has diminished, Pramac remains independent and does not have access to the extensive resources of a factory team.
Martin also acknowledged the significance of potentially winning against a factory rider, as he can secure the title in the sprint race in Barcelona.
“He’s in a different moment; he’s been in MotoGP for six years, he’s in an official team, he has everything ready to win,” Martin said. “I have a team of 12 people fighting alone against the world. With that, to have achieved seven sprint wins, three full-race victories, and 30 podiums—15 in main races and 15 in sprints—I couldn’t ask for more.
"The success isn’t just because of me; it’s because of my people, my team, and everyone around me. I want to win for them, so they can enjoy it—that’s what fills me with joy and excitement."
Martin said that winning the 2024 title would be especially meaningful because he would have defeated Bagnaia, a dominant competitor.
“It’s a point of pride to be at this stage of the season fighting for the championship,” he said. “Having a rival like Bagnaia pushes me to be better.
“Pecco is at his peak, and being able to push him to the limit makes what we’re achieving even more valuable.
“I’ve won seven times this year, true, but the final race will be incredibly tough, especially with Pecco in the form he’s in. We’ll see how the weekend unfolds; the cooler conditions should work in my favor.
“In hot conditions, Pecco has the advantage. Lower temperatures come with more risk, but it’s the same for both of us.
"Playing for the title in the final event is always challenging; anything can happen.
“But I’m going in confident and believing that I can make it happen.”
