Jorge Martin’s MotoGP season has hit another major setback. After a terrifying crash during the Qatar Grand Prix, the Spanish rider has been diagnosed with 11 broken ribs and a collapsed lung. Now hospitalized in Doha, Martin may be out of action for up to three months as he faces a long and painful recovery.
Just when we were happy that Jorge Martin finally returned for the Qatar Grand Prix, he suffered a serious crash during the race. Martin had just barely returned to racing action, and now he is again in a hospital bed—this time with injuries that could keep him out of racing for at least three months.
His crash happened on lap 14 during Sunday’s race, when Martin lost control and hit the ground hard. But what made things even worse was that Fabio di Giannantonio could not avoid him at that moment and accidentally ran over him as he lay on the track. The medical teams rushed in, and Martin was taken straight to a hospital in Doha.
Doctors later confirmed the severity of the incident. In the report, it stated that he has 11 broken ribs and a collapsed lung, also known in medical terms as a pneumothorax. In the hospital, a drainage tube has been placed in his chest to help his lung heal, which is a painful but necessary part of his treatment.
Autosport got a source who told them, “His second night in the hospital was a bit better, but he’s still in a lot of pain. The tube in his side is especially uncomfortable.”
So right now, Martin’s main goal is simply to get home to Spain, but the doctors said that flying at this stage may be too risky. If everything goes smoothly, he should be able to board a flight in two or three weeks, yet this depends on how his lung recovers. Until then, he is remaining under medical supervision.
Even once he makes it back to Spain, the recovery will be a long one. The MotoGP doctors think it will take around three months before Martin can even think about racing again.
And in a show of sportsmanship, the majority of MotoGP riders sent wishes for Martin’s recovery journey, hoping he will get better soon. Marc Marquez even offered Martin advice, as he recently reflected on his own career and admitted that his biggest regret was coming back from injury too early.
In an interview, Martin said he had taken that advice seriously before Qatar, saying that he appreciated Marquez’s honesty.
