Franco Colapinto has impressed fans with his strong performances for Williams in F1 since his unexpected debut at Monza, but according to his words, he isn’t surprised.
When Franco Colapinto, replaced Logan Sargeant starting from the Italian Grand Prix at the beginning of September, the F1 world was a bit concerned, whether it was a good move for Williams to go for someone inexperienced.
However, Colapinto has quickly made a strong impression in his first three races in Formula 1. He delivered a promising debut at the Italian Grand Prix, showcasing his potential right from the start.
This was followed by a breakthrough performance in Baku, where he scored his first and valuable points for Williams. He then continued to impress in Singapore, with another solid drive, finishing just outside of points.
It seems like the Argentine driver has quickly settled into F1, handling the pressure with ease. In just three races, he's gotten closer to his teammate Alex Albon than his predecessor did in almost 2 years.
While many are impressed by his speed, results, and consistency, Colapinto himself isn’t surprised, as he told Motorsport.com.
“I know what I can do, and I was expecting to be quick," he said confidently.
"Even though I didn't have a lot of experience with the car, that was the idea of the team and why they put me in the car, so I'm happy to be helping the team."
Colapinto jumped in the FW46 mid-season, without any experience of driving it, as well as with difficult tracks like Baku and Singapore.
"It's tough. There are a lot of things you can do in the car with the tools and so much stuff that you can change.
“But I am learning every time I'm going out and I'm just getting a bit more used to the car, a bit more used to how I can extract the maximum performance of the car, and that's going well."
Colapinto’s future in F1 remains uncertain, as he will be replaced by Carlos Sainz for the 2025 season due to a contract the Spaniard signed with Williams before any mid-season switch was announced. While Colapinto is still in the running for the Sauber seat, chances are not looking very good for him.
