Four Formula 1 drivers—Lando Norris, George Russell, Yuki Tsunoda, and Liam Lawson—face post-race investigations following an aborted start procedure at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

The start was called off after Lance Stroll crashed on the formation lap, sliding off the track and hitting a wall before his car became stuck in a gravel trap. With the Aston Martin car needing recovery, the race director opted to abort the start as the field lined up on the grid.

However, as the message for an aborted start was displayed, Norris pulled away from the grid to complete an additional formation lap, which is a breach of F1 regulations.

According to Article 47.1 of the Sporting Regulations, when the start is aborted, all cars should remain stationary on the grid until a restart procedure begins.

Norris’ early move was noted by race control, which then extended the investigation to include Russell, Tsunoda, and Lawson for the same offense. Max Verstappen and several other drivers initially remained on the grid, as per the rules, before eventually moving.

The stewards deferred their investigation of the incident until after the race to allow time to gather the drivers’ perspectives on the unexpected situation, rather than issuing in-race penalties.

The aborted start procedure led to a delay but, once resolved, the race proceeded without further interruption from the initial confusion.

Additionally, George Russell and his Mercedes teammate, Lewis Hamilton, are under separate investigation for a potential tyre infringement. Reports indicate that tyre pressures on their cars were adjusted after the tyres had been fitted, which could violate pre-race regulations.

Last but not least, Carlos Sainz was summoned to the stewards as well for reported dangerous driving after retiring from the race.
