News.GP journalist who’s all about the thrilling worlds of MotoGP and Formula 1.KTM rider Brad Binder is passionate about seeing both MotoGP and Formula 1 races return to South Africa’s iconic Kyalami Circuit. He shares his thoughts on the track’s potential and the small changes needed to make it MotoGP-ready.
KTM rider Brad Binder has expressed his disappointment that neither MotoGP nor Formula 1 races at South Africa's Kyalami Circuit, calling it "such a sick track." Binder feels it’s a shame that both motorsport giants are not racing there, especially since the venue is so impressive in his opinion.
MotoGP hasn’t raced in South Africa in over 20 years, with its last Grand Prix taking place in Welkom in 2004, where Valentino Rossi took his first Yamaha victory. Meanwhile, Formula 1 has not raced in South Africa since 1993.
However, efforts to bring F1 back to Kyalami fell through in 2023, and although South Africa's government continues to push for the return of the South African Grand Prix, Binder is eager to see both MotoGP and F1 race there again. "Honestly, I was actually at Kyalami [recently]," he said for Crash.net. "I did some laps before we came here. It’s such a cool track and venue, so it’s sad that we don’t have Formula 1 and MotoGP racing there. I really hope we can bring them back soon."
While Binder believes that minor adjustments would be needed for MotoGP, he also insists that the track doesn’t require a complete reconstruction. "For Formula 1, they won’t need to change anything," he explained. "But for MotoGP, there would have to be a few small changes. Some areas have asphalt run-off, and the rules require gravel there. So, I’m sure there’d need to be some adjustments, but it doesn’t need a full rebuild. A few minor changes would make it perfect."
Work is already underway at Kyalami to upgrade the track to FIA Grade 1 standards, which are necessary for hosting an F1 race. At the same time, there are two other proposals to bring an F1 race to Cape Town, either on a street circuit or a custom-built track.
Even though there are no current plans for MotoGP to return to Africa, Brad Binder remains hopeful.
