News.GP journalist who’s all about the thrilling worlds of MotoGP and Formula 1.Alex Marquez has opened up about the pressures of competing alongside his brother, six-time world champion Marc Marquez, in the 2024 MotoGP season. With Marc’s high-profile move to Gresini Racing, the satellite team faced unprecedented media attention, which initially proved challenging for Alex to navigate.
Alex Marquez has recently opened up about the challenges he faced during the season, highlighting the additional pressure of having his older brother as a teammate.
Marc Marquez made his mark in racing history when he shocked the world by leaving Honda to join Gresini Racing. Following several tough years and a serious arm injury, Marc enjoyed a resurgence of confidence. His arrival at Gresini brought unprecedented media attention to the satellite team, and this spotlight proved overwhelming at first for Alex.
“This pressure didn’t just come from journalists; even external observers were paying more attention. That’s the hard part. At the start, you could sense the team’s nervousness. Having an eight-time world champion in the box added tension. But after two, three, or four races, things settled down, and the atmosphere became much more relaxed.”
The Marquez brothers previously raced as teammates at Honda in 2020, though their time on track together was brief due to Marc’s serious arm injury.
Alex, who will continue to race with Gresini in 2025, had a challenging season. After a successful 2023, which included grand prix podiums and a sprint race victory, his performance dipped on the GP23 bike. He managed only one podium finish, claiming third place at the German GP behind his brother Marc. Alex finished the season eighth in the riders’ standings.
The German GP podium was a historic moment, as it was the first time the two brothers shared a podium in the MotoGP class, an achievement last accomplished by Nobuatsu and Takuma Aoki in 1997. Meanwhile, Marc’s seat has been filled by rookie Fermin Aldeguer for the upcoming season.
